Answer: PSP stands for Playstation Portable. The PSP is Sony’s first handheld. Its main features include a 4.3 inch screen (diagonally), PS2 quality graphics, and the capability to play movies and music.
QUESTION: How do the games come?
Answer: The games will be on Sony's new UMD’s (Universal Media Disc) format, which are like mini CDs inside a small case. Each UMD will be able to hold 1.8 GB of data, and will be read only.
QUESTION: Where do I save my games?
Answer: As you can't write to the UMD, the Sony PSP also supports Sony Memory Sticks. Which can also be used to save music and videos too.
QUESTION: Can the PSP play CDs, DVDs or Playstation 1/2 games?
Answer: No, as the PSP is smaller than a CD or DVD hence why it takes UMD instead. So Sony would have to relaease an external drive to allow these formats to be played.
QUESTION: What are Regions and how does it effect me?
Answer: Regions have been imposed by the film companies to protect their movie releases around the world. The Region codes are designed to only allow the right Region Sony PSP to watch the same Region UMD. So a Region 2 Sony PSP will only be able to watch a Region 2 UMD Video. Here is the full Region list:
- Region 1: The US, US territories, Canada
- Region 2: Europe, Japan, Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland
- Region 3: Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong
- Region 4: Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Caribbean
- Region 5: Russia, Eastern Europe, India, most of Africa, North Korea, Mongolia
- Region 6: China
- Region 0: Also known as ‘Region All’ or ‘Region Free’, Region 0 are compatible with all Sony PSP.
So for example a Region 2 UMD video will work on Sony PSP that has been bought from the United Kingdom or Japan, along with the rest of Europe, Middle East, Egypt, South Africa & Greenland.

Answer: No, so far to our knowledge all the Sony PSP games that have been released have been Region Free. So you can play any game from any country. Useful if your flying around the world and stuck in an airport. However the games are marked from which region they came from.
